the “silk road” started as a sea route between China and the Roman Empire and continued for several centuries. With the spread of islam (who tried to cut the road and monopolise the trade) the routes were forced to move north, overland. In that case the most common means of transport would be carts and camels. The size of the caravan would vary- but bear in mind that even the smallest ship can carry 500 tons of goods- while a camel can only carry 300 kilos- which means nearly 2000 camels for 500 tonnes of goods.
