What do you know about Filipino traditions? Filipinos have distinctive cultures and have a lot of traditions. This is what makes a Filipino unique. The main reason for this is because of the colonial era in the Philippines. The coming of Americans, Spaniards, Chinese, and Japanese made a big influence in the culture of the Filipinos, including their traditions.

Courting is observed in the Philippines. Filipina women love to be wooed. This is because by nature Filipinos in general are romantic. Although gone are the days of evening serenade, a tradition where Filipino men would visit to the house of the Filipina women they courted. The man would sing a love song to the woman, either he plays his strings by himself or hired someone to play the guitar for him. If he is not gifted with a good voice, he could also hire a singer for him to serenade the woman. At the present time, men would still visit the woman’s house and court the Filipina.

The Filipino Engagement Tradition

Marriage proposal is still observed in the Philippines involving the parents and even close relatives of the woman. The man would seek the approval of the parents. The family of the groom is also involved here. The man’s parents are also there to ask the hand of the girl to be the bride of their son. Once the parents of the woman approves it, the engagement is official. The wedding plans will soon be set. The marriage proposal is called “Pamanhikan”.
